The Gyst Life
Creativity is imperfect by nature. This show navigates the everchanging flow of our thoughts, ideas and experiences that shape our lives, our work and our relationship to creativity. We talk about the journey of uncovering the deeper meaning in our work, regardless of what it is, the mastery achieved and the powerful ideas that emerge as we recommit to the messy imperfect process that is creativity. We believe everyone is creative and you don’t need to have everything figured out to create something meaningful, because even those who have their shit together, can still find meaning and purpose missing in their life and their work.

35. Responsibility = Response | Ability
Saturday Aug 11, 2018
Saturday Aug 11, 2018
This week David and Vern have a little fun as they share about some new audio developments with the podcast. We say ‘fun’ because we are so out of our comfort zone with audio, things that we’ve missed in our setup are beneath novice. And we are embracing the learning..
The podcast switches gears as we share some intimate stories that point to what responsibility really means and how we choose to embrace the opportunities that come with it!
Often we look at a ‘responsibility’ as a burden or a thing we have to do. It’s quite the opposite, in that it is a choice. You choose to respond to a situation given your ability. Sometimes we take on responsibilities that we don’t have the ability or support to deal with. That is a disempowering context.
Responsibility actually gives us access to the appropriate actions.
What sort of action were you inspired to take lately? That you would not normally have done, we would love to hear from you.

34. There is GOLD everywhere...
Saturday Aug 04, 2018
Saturday Aug 04, 2018
This week David and Vern have a conversation about what ideal we use to gauge our success. It is so easy to focus on lack or being happy one day when this or that happens. When is the last time you took time to review how far you’ve come and how much you’ve grown?
It is so easy for us to discredit the work we are putting in around creating our lives. Remember that what you view as basic tables steaks would be enough to cripple many others.
Look what you have accomplished in your life, the loss, the breakdowns, things you didn’t think you’d be able to deal with and you did. Just imagine for a minute what would be possible if we acknowledge ourselves and focused on our passions and contributions. What if we intentionally created the life we really want instead of the life we think we SHOULD be leading.

33. ‘Brules’ Limit You!
Monday Jul 30, 2018
Monday Jul 30, 2018
In this episode, David and I pull apart some of the Systems for Living that are currently not serving us (The BRULES), along with some new ones we're implementing into our lives.
What are Brules you ask? They are the BULLSHIT RULES we accept as absolute truths and what govern how we live. This is a term coined by Vishin Lakhani, founder of Mind Valley and author of the book The Code of the Extraordinary Mind.
Both David and I are thoroughly enjoying this book and highly recommend it.
__
Human beings have a tendency to imitate for convenience and as a result, so many obsolete ideas have been passed down from generation to generation.
Ideas like "Success = Hard Work" or that you need a "College Degree" or a "Fat bank account" to be happy.
If you were to look, what conditions show up and govern your happiness, fulfillment, and self-expression? Are you able to choose happiness without condition or are you waiting for something to happen first? These are all the Brules that were passed down (without you realizing) and do not serve you.
But what if life didn’t have to go that way?”
What if you could consciously choose to enjoy the journey of your deliberate creation. That the opportunity lay in questioning the RELATIVE truths that govern our security vs the ABSOLUTE truths that just are.
A relative truth: Green means GO and Red means STOP
vs
An absolute truth: that gravity exists on Earth and if you step off the cliff you will hit the ground.
We are entering into one of the most disruptive eras in human history. And one of the biggest challenges we face today are the relative truths that occur as absolute. These are our current expired systems and structures in society, such as borders, cultures, religions etc.
How we become truly connected as citizens of the world will rely largely on our willingness to question the relative and perceived absolute truths around us. Not from a place of malice, resignation or judgment but from the perspective that questioning these things put us on a natural path of learning, growth and the inevitable expansion of our abilities in all aspects of life.
THAT SAID, WE HAVE A QUESTION:
What do you who are actively influencing and encouraging our next generation of empowered questioners and culture hackers?
Let us know in the comments!
“We are locked into 20th century approaches that are holding back
the next big fundamental shifts in human capacity.”
— Bill Jensen

32. IT’S GAME ON! HOW ARE YOU LEVELING UP?
Saturday Jul 21, 2018
Saturday Jul 21, 2018
We have a special guest today! Keith Williams was a critical instrument that funneled our creative process as we explored our second intro to the podcast.
Today Keith shares about his passion as an audio guy and musician and the stories he finds occupying his mind that prevent him from living out his passion as an audio engineer and producer.
We talk about the struggles that can occur when you’re learning how to deal with people. When to notice when your passion starts turning into a job and become work. And to ask yourself “Why are you doing what you’re doing” often.
It’s through this process when you will discover that it’s not always a fit and you will not always knock it out of the park. That’s the opportunity.
And remember, it’s not because you have it, it’s because you want to.

31. WHAT FUELS YOUR DREAMS AND WHAT KEEPS YOU COMFY?
Saturday Jul 07, 2018
Saturday Jul 07, 2018
Do you get that you can create what you want your life to look like? You might nod yes, yet there is a part of you that puts up barriers that you’re not even aware of that stops you cold in your tracks.
You’re creating something new and that’s why it feels so weird and different and why you’re not sure about it. You just need to trust the process and surrender to it. Whether you’re in business for yourself or just looking to explore what’s next in your life, know that it will be uncomfortable to shift into a new paradigm.
You will want to stop because it's uncomfortable. You will fall off the wagon and you need to get back on it.
That is the game!
Looking for something that can support you in this capacity? Be sure to listen to the full podcast, some unexpected magic happens near the end and we’re excited to create it.
More to come!

Saturday Jun 30, 2018
Saturday Jun 30, 2018
This week we hear from Nathan, who runs a successful photography business. The interesting thing about that is, it wasn’t always that way. It took something for him to create his life the way it is now.
It all starts with getting clear about what you want life to look like and then, you have to DECIDE, “I’m going to do this”. Once you decide and commit to that new future, things around you start to respond. Your attitudes and behaviors will shift to accommodate your commitments.
Join us as our guest shares authentic, vulnerable stories about his journey! Listen and think about how you can pull lessons from this conversation and apply them to your situation! Living a life you love is totally possible and it takes something. How bad do you want it?

28. Weekend Warrior. Are you Check Out or Tapped In?
Saturday Jun 16, 2018
Saturday Jun 16, 2018
This week like most weeks had a taste of momentum a pint of progress and the inevitable aftertaste of breakdowns. And then Friday rolled around and we both noticed something interesting.
The tank was getting empty, the pull to unplug begins to show up. The wanting to have a beer, do nothing and “recharge” our batteries. But does that actually recharge us?
2 worlds for the Weekend Warrior began to show up:
Do nothing, check-out and veg-out. and not experience any sort of recharge really
Or create what recharge actually looks like and do something that you really enjoy doing. Because it’s in that action where the real recharge happens.
Isn’t choice beautiful?

27. YOU SUCK AT LISTENING AND YOU'RE NOT STEPPING UP
Saturday Jun 09, 2018
Saturday Jun 09, 2018
If that triggered you and you think you actually are good at listening and communicating, then this podcast is definitely for you.
I share with Vern the impact of the choices I’ve made within the arena of owning who I say I am, how I listen and the commitment I have around making a difference with another human being.
This week we lost a client and as a team, we all got to look at how we showed up in that new budding relationship, what we got stuck up on, what we said and what we meant. What was heard and what others made that mean.
As a team we set the bar high and failed to actually show up to be able to hit that bar.
It was simple. As a team, we did not step up. I did not step up. I am 100% responsible for this outcome.
And actually it was missing from everyone involved (and I mean everyone) and it was the perfect exercise to true up and measure the difference between where we’re at and where we want to be.

26. Keep it Weird but Be Nimble
Sunday Jun 03, 2018
Sunday Jun 03, 2018
We all want to be the inventor of the next great crazy idea, trend or movement, and sometimes the market tells you that they’re either not ready or not interested.
This week David and Vern have an interesting conversation with Jeff, a local entrepreneur who brings practical lessons from real life business development.
Jeff is co-owner of a few local businesses:
Vine Arts, a local boutique wine and spirits shop https://www.vinearts.ca/
Proof, a great little cocktail lounge on 4th https://www.proofyyc.com/
Donna Mac, a new restaurant that’s recently opened up in the beltline. http://www.donnamacyyc.ca/
It never ceases to amaze us how lessons in life and business are so transferable across the board. Jeff describes some insights from his experience in the hospitality industry and we both received value from what he shared.
Jeff shares what is possible when you have a vision and the courage to take action. However, he reminds us to stay humble and be willing to allow your vision to shift as you get feedback from those you aim to serve.
One of the founding principles of Donna Mac comes from a philosophy of resourcefulness and embraces the mantra that ‘ever-changing’ is the only constant and we could not agree more.
Our biggest takeaway is this:
It’s critical to do the foundational work that supports clarity around why you’re doing what you’re doing, but it is equally critical to understand that we’re always up against a moving target, so make sure you take the time to check-in that it’s still valid, and makes sense for you and for others.
